firenze, italia!

yep. we've been back a month now and i'm still not done recapping our time in italy. with the holidays  approaching, my two littles, and the fact that it gets dark by 5pm these days (i mean, really!) i just don't know where the time goes. but good news is, here are a few photos from our time in florence if you'd like to see.  we were only there for a day and a night. and to put it simply, not long enough! this city was unreal.  seeing michelanglo's david in person, walking through the old market, all of those beautiful narrow streets and well dressed italians on bikes with baskets and old fashioned bells...  plus, we had rice gelato in florence and i'm pretty sure nothing will top that in this lifetime.  try as hard as you'd like, non-rice-flavored gelato, but it's just not going to happen.

cinque terre, italia!

after our time in florence, we took the train to riomaggiore. we had heard nothing but rave reviews about cinque terre and we were really excited to explore the colorful little towns. unfortunately, all of the trails you can hike between the towns were closed due to landslides, and none of the boats were running either (a con to traveling during off season i suppose). we ended up taking the train between towns (which was OK, except for the long waits between trains) and visited monterosso al mare.

i'm not sure what it's like during other times of the year, but cinque terre felt really quiet and sleepy while we were there... i think we only passed a handful of other tourists during our stay.  we slept in a little apartment that was 6 billion flights of stairs high (i kid. only 9 flights. but the steepest 9 flights of my life.) it paid off though because we had a view from our little room like no other. it didn't even feel real, it was so beautiful.

^^^sometimes trying to take a photo of the three of us means a photo like this.^^^
^^^^since it comes from this region, it only seemed right to order
a pasta with pesto genovese sauce. and naturally,
i have this new thing for pesto now. ^^^^

we saw santa at the church christmas party last saturday.  eleanor still doesn't like the guy...
and just as i was starting to think how awful we are as parents forcing our child to sit on the lap of some stranger in a big red suit with a weird looking beard, samson surprised me by loving every minute on santa's knee....
merry christmas!
and happy weekend!

i still can't believe what happened on friday in connecticut. this world we live in is beyond scary sometimes. i have been holding and hugging my family all weekend long... they are what i live for. losing one of them would destroy me. and yet people lose loved ones every day... i just don't know how they do it. i can't imagine what the families in connecticut must be going through who lost children or loved ones. how do you carry on after something like that?  this world needs more love. more kindness.  more compassion.

i found this clip, of a statement made by one of the fathers who lost his 6 year old daughter to be so inspiring. please please go watch it. as a parent who has not lost a child, i cannot begin to know the pain and suffering he is experiencing... i mean, how is he even standing there and forming sentences? but i'm so thankful he shared this message. there is still love, there is still kindness and there is still good in this world. although heaven knows we need more of it.  my thoughts and prayers are with them.

over the weekend...

this weekend we had a few friends in town from DC. and in my opinion, there is never a better excuse to go eat and eat and eat in new york city like there is when people are in town.  i feel like we just move from a bagel to a cupcake to an extra large donut to a cheeseburger and milkshake... you know? there's no place for gluttony like new york.  right now, i sit here thinking that juice cleanse making its way around the internet doesn't sound like such a bad idea. but you know me.... ;)

and now, a few photos from our weekend...
---eleanor and papa admiring the rockerfeller christmas tree!---
---yes, that's my husband dancing on the street with a bunch of random santas---
